I enjoyed reading McKinsey’s “Physician Perspectives on Scaling Impact from the CEO Seat.” It highlights something many of us in medicine know but rarely say, physician leaders are often viewed as experienced but underprepared for the full scope of business leadership.
Mentorship and relationships are essential, but they’re not enough. To lead at scale and to sit in the CEO seat, you need to understand finance, strategy, and organizational levers as deeply as you understand clinical care.
That’s exactly why I chose to pursue an MBA at Kellogg-Northwestern. Learning how to read a balance sheet, evaluate strategy, and think like an operator changes how you see decisions, risk, and value creation.
Physicians have the vision and empathy to lead healthcare forward — but pairing that with true business fluency is what makes transformation possible.
