Dr. Gregory Rubin, DO, MBA

Board-certified sports medicine physician · Naples, Florida

I treat sports and orthopedic injuries without surgery. That means precise diagnosis, ultrasound in the room rather than a referral somewhere else, and a plan that gets you back to your sport instead of waiting on an operating room.

Most of what walks through my door in Naples comes from pickleball, tennis, golf, and running, alongside the everyday injuries that don't care what sport you play. Some of it needs a surgeon. Most of it doesn't, and knowing the difference is the job.

Training and credentials

  • Board certified in internal medicine, with a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in sports medicine
  • Sports medicine fellowship — University of Kentucky
  • Internal medicine residency — University of Connecticut
  • Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) — Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) — Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University

The internal medicine training matters more than it sounds. Joint pain isn't always a joint problem, and the patients I see are often managing other conditions at the same time. Seeing the whole picture changes what I look for.

The MBA is unusual for a practicing physician, and it shows up in how this practice runs: published self-pay pricing, same-day access without a referral, and imaging read during the visit. Much of what frustrates patients about orthopedic care is an operations problem, not a medical one.

What I treat

  • Shoulder — rotator cuff tendinopathy and tears, impingement, frozen shoulder, AC joint injury
  • Elbow — tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, "pickleball elbow," bursitis
  • Knee — arthritis, meniscus tears, patellar tendinopathy, ligament sprains
  • Foot and ankle — Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, sprains, stress fractures
  • Hip — gluteal tendinopathy, bursitis, labral irritation, arthritis
  • Wrist and hand — tendonitis, sprains, arthritis, nerve entrapment
  • Bone health — osteoporosis, fracture prevention, treatment of low bone density

How I practice

The Pickleball Doctor

Naples may be the pickleball capital of the country, and the injuries that come with it are their own category: Achilles ruptures on the third game of the day, elbow pain that won't quit, knees that ache after a tournament weekend. I've seen enough of it to know the patterns. More on pickleball injuries and how I treat them →

Sports coverage

I provide sideline and event coverage for local teams and athletic events in Southwest Florida. Covering games changes how you practice. You learn to make a decision on the spot, with the athlete's season and long-term health both in front of you. More on sports coverage →

Writing and media

I write about sports medicine for clinicians and patients, and I've been quoted on injury prevention and recovery in national outlets. See media contributions → · Read the blog →
